Put on Your Sunglasses of Positivity

Do you own a pair of sunglasses? I do! Mines are from Warby Parker. Not only do they protect my eyes from the overly bright sun, but let’s be real, they also make me look cooler. But sunglasses do more than make a fashion statement. They help you see clearly when everything around you feels too bright or too much. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need in life, not just for our eyes, but for our perspective.

Perspective Is Everything

Wearing sunglasses is a perfect metaphor for how we choose to view life. When you look through a positive lens, you reduce the mental “glare” of fear, worry, and feeling overwhelm. You see things more clearly, and you’re more likely to move forward instead of freezing up.

There’s a powerful story in the Bible that shows this in action. It’s found in the book of Numbers 13-14. The people of Israel had finally made it to the edge of the land God promised them. All they had to do was go in and take it. But before they did, Moses sent twelve men to scout it out. What happened next all came down to perspective. Ten of the spies came back terrified because of their perspective. Look at what they said, “…We were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” That’s the power of a negative lens. It shrinks your confidence and magnifies your fear.

But two spies, Joshua and Caleb, saw the same land and same people and came to a completely different conclusion:  “Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.”

That’s the power of a positive lens. It fuels courage, even when the odds look stacked.

You Get to Choose Your Lens

Just like those twelve spies, you and I are constantly facing situations that test how we see things. Will we respond with fear—or faith? Will we see problems—or possibilities?

The good news is, the choice is ours. And the Scripture encourages us to make the one that brings life: “Choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.”—Deuteronomy 30:19

Wear the Right Glasses

So next time you put on your sunglasses to block out the sun, let it remind you to filter your thoughts the same way. Block out the glare of negativity. See things through the lens of hope and possibility. Enjoy the sunshine. Remember the good. And stay in expectation of even better things ahead.
